We are hoping to help a displaced Hurricane Harvey dog that is in New Hampshire and destined to return to TX. Her adoption fee is $250 and she can be met on Saturday 10/28 at our Friends & Family BBQ in Swanzey NH.
Texas girl JENNA was part of the southeast Texas "rescue". Through a lot of drama, 96 dogs were transported to our city from [rescue name deleted] during the hurricane and placed at a Senior Center as command base. Dogs from this "rescue" lacked any records and we did not know at the time, but many of the animals there had been living in boarding for not months but YEARS. From what was gathered, this "rescue" was really more of a boarding/hoarding situation where the dogs weren't well cared for and certainly not promoted for adoption.
Jenna was an obvious pick because she was SO affectionate and attentive from the moment we met her. Jenna did great at the vet and was much loved on by the staff. Then Jenna went to a different boarding place with us while we worked out a foster shuffle. While there, Jenna was on the receiving end of a scuffle. She was fine - just a cut on the ear and on her leg but she did hold a grudge against another dog that was in the scuffle (large female black/white pittie). That was the only dog she ever had an issue with - Jenna and the other dog would growl at each other at an event, but Jenna was always very easy to redirect - just ask her to sit for a treat, or squeak a toy to get her attention.
Jenna moved to the foster home for several weeks, who has has many dogs at her home, ranging from 6 - 65lbs. Jenna did fabulously there. Jenna preferred to hang out inside with the smaller dogs and loved to be on the couch or squeaking a toy on a dog bed in the living room. The foster's elderly mother lives with her, and Jenna was very gentle with her. Jenna had no issues with other dogs in the home (and again - there are many dogs in that home). Her only issue is that she jumped the fence (4ft chain link).
Jenna also did exceptionally well at adoption events - always very attentive to her handler (both men and women). Jenna takes treats easily and loved when she had the opportunity to show off her commands or kiss kids. We even used Jenna as a test dog to parallel walk another scared/reactive dog with to help calm him down and give him a buddy.
We transported Jenna up to a New England partner and honestly I didn't give it a second thought because she had been so stellar here in her behavior - fun, friendly, attentive and smart.
We used a commercial transporter and the stress of the journey and transition must have weighed heavily on her. When Jenna moved to foster home after clearing quarantine, she was jumpy and irritated. She was off leash in the first few hours in the home with 2 other dogs and bit one of the other dogs in the leg, requiring stitches. ;( The other dog is fine thankfully. He is quite a bit larger than her, so maybe that was the issue - she had been with dogs mostly her size or smaller in her foster home.
